A nodule is a solid, dome-shaped or irregularly-shaped lesion. Nodules are characterized by inflammation, extending into deeper layers of the skin and may cause tissue destruction that results in scarring. A nodule may be very painful.

A cyst is a sac-like lesion containing liquid or semi-liquid material consisting of white blood cells, dead cells, and bacteria. It is larger than a pustule, may be severely inflamed, extends into deeper layers of the skin, may be very painful, and can result in scarring. Cysts and nodules often occur together in a severe form of acne called nodulocystic. Systemic therapy with isotretinoin is sometimes the only effective treatment for nodulocystic acne. Some acne investigators believe that true cysts rarely occur in acne, and that (1) the lesions called cysts are usually severely inflamed nodules, and (2) the term nodulocystic should be abandoned. Regardless of terminology, this is a severe form of acne that is often resistant to treatment and likely to leave scars after healing.

G'day Diane C,

Thanks for your question.

A cyst is a closed sac which develops abnormally while a nodule is an small aggregation of cells. A nodule is usually less harmful than a cyst.

A cyst is a closed sac having a distinct membrane and developing abnormally in a cavity or structure of the body. Cysts may occur as a result of a developmental error in the embryo during pregnancy or they may be caused by infections. However, they sometimes arise spontaneously with no apparent cause. Cysts may often be dangerous as they may have negative effects (for instance, compression) on the nearby tissue. They may contain air, fluids, or semi-solid material. A collection of pus is called an abcess, not a cyst.

Cysts may also be a sack that encloses an organism during a dormant period, such as in the case of certain parasites. They protect the parasite from the churning acid of the stomach and once in the intestines, it breaks out.

Cystic fibrosis is an example of a genetic disorder whereby cysts develop in lung tissue and release mucus into the lungs reducing lung capacity and causing persistent coughing.

Cysts can occur anywhere in the body; however, some of the more common ones are listed here:

* Ganglion cyst (hand/foot joints and tendons)
* Ovarian cyst (ovaries, functional and pathological)
* Pilonidal cyst (skin infection near tailbone)
* Sebaceous cyst (sac below skin)
* Paratubal cyst
* Vocal fold cyst
* Bronchial cyst
* Renal cyst (kidneys)
* Tarlov cyst
* Radicular cyst (associated with the roots of non-vital teeth)
* Dentigerous Cyst (associated with the crowns of non-erupted teeth)
* Keratocyst (in the jaws, these can appear solitary or associated with the Gorling-Goltz Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. The latest World Health Organization classification considers Keratocysts as tumors rather than cysts.

In medicine, a nodule refers to a small aggregation of cells.

Nodules may form on tendons and muscles in response to injury. The vocal cords may also develop nodules. Nodules are normally benign and often painless, although they can affect the functioning of the organ.

Examples of nodules are:

* Vocal fold nodule
* Thyroid nodule

I have enclosed some sources for further reference.

Regards

NATURAL ACNE PROTOCOL
1/ Never, ever touch your face.
2/ Use 3 facecloths to wash your face, one to soap on, one to soap off with very hot water, one to rinse off with ice cold water, in that order, once a day.
3/ If you are under 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A once a day with a full meal
4/ If you are over 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A twice a day with a full meal.
Do not get pregnant while taking vitamin A. Do not take any more, like Accutane, it will stop you growing.
5/ Never, ever. pick, squeeze or pop your spot. Read number 1 again.
6/ Do this for 90 days.
7/ Invest in a brand new pillow and 2 new or more pillow cases to double bag' your pillow. HOT wash every couple of days.

A bit of advice given to me as a teenager, a bit of science as I am studying allergic reactions and vitamin A is a part of that. A bit of research: I sat in a lecture at the back and watched the acne prone pick at their faces, those with the worse acne touched their faces 32 times in an hour, the clearest complexions didn't touch their faces even once. I have circumstantial evidence that acne is the result of dermatophyte transfer from hands to face...where it does not get washed off and is well fed by hormones, sweat a
nd oil...just a hypothesis... But it would explain why vitamin A is so effective as vitamin causes skin to remove dermatophytes.

The secret is never to touch the spots
