There's actually a book called "How To Be A Lesbian." I remember a bi-sexual female friend of mine & I went to Barnes or Borders -- some big bookstore & we each bought a book re Lesbians and then read them & traded books. So the title of your book actually comes up on the register so everyone can read what you are buying. I about had a fit laughing so hard when she went up and HOW TO BE A LESBIAN flashed across the screen. LOL

So my short answer is: EXPERIENCE. I think I agree with the aforementioned being turned off by men, bad experiences with men and bad experiences with bad men.

Anyhow my 2 cents would have to include being attracted to women, whether or not you ever fullfill those feelings or not. The first girl to touch me sexually was 5 (we were both 5). The next was a bisexual 13 yo friend from school who made repeated passes at me over the years but I had no interest in her. She was ugly on the inside. But @ age 15 she asked me the same question you are now, hers was: "Why do you think women are attracted to other women" and her answer was "They know what women like." I think she meant how girls would like to be loved as well as sexually. As an adult I met a gorgeous woman who was really interested in me and while I find women beautiful I guess I'm not really interested in more than kissing; much to her frustration. But I guess I'm a metrosexual or bisexual because I believe I fall in love with PEOPLE not a certain gender. I have no doubt I could fall for the right girl or guy; ahem! (or girl & guy because I support polyamory as well. As in *responsible* non-monogamy).

Well, for me I woke up one saturday morning and laid there in bed looking at the ceiling. I was contemplating what I wanted to do that day. "Go to the mall? No. Go get my nails done? No. I know, something I have never done before.....I'll become a lesbian!" It is hard at times though. You have to really work at it. Sometimes you even have to go to the doctor for a lesbian shot.

I have known other women though that become lesbian because after experiences with men it is the only alternative.

The science: No one knows yet exactly what causes sexual orientation (we don't know what causes a person to be straight OR gay) but all the evidence keeps pointing to biology. Saying someone is "born that way" doesn't mean they are born with sexual attractions, it just means when they become aware of sexual feelings (usually at puberty) they discover that they are attracted toward the same sex rather than the opposite sex.

lesbians and gays are born with that predisposition. same as straight people are. all things point to biology. it is not caused by being molested, having gay parents/families, knowing someone gay...whatever ridiculous reasons people give you. how do I know? I wasn't molested. my parents were straight.
