This is really a phenomenon of the past few decades. Prior to that, both parties ran the full political gamut from liberal to conservative. (Truman and Kennedy were more conservative than Bush, Nixon was more liberal than Clinton)

But about 30 years ago, the rabid radical left (hippie peace movement) all moved over to the Democrat party, and it has since then became more and more delineated. The Democrat core is now liberal, and the Republican core is now conservative.

You can see this today - just look at people calling Lieberman a Neocon. And the conservative core call liberal Republican senators RINOs (Republican In Name Only). This has led to both parties being somewhat unbalanced, and the political divide has become a chasm.

This is not good for America.

Because Democrats will represent liberals more than any other party, and the Republicans hold more Conservative principles. Why would a Conservative vote for a Democrat if their ideals are completely different anyways? All this about only voting for their party and such.... It's only common sense.

how do you know how people vote? I vote conservatives in the money positions, and liberals in the social program positions. After all, that is the best people for the jobs. In the primaries, you have to vote straight ballots, but not in NOv elections

i vote conservative. if a democrat was going to be strong on defense, and believe in less government then i would vote for them. most of the time they start talking about more programs to help people which means bigger more money. i don't believe the government should pick my charity for me. now that's not to say i would vote for Rudy i like his stance on the war but i don't agree with him on social issues. so if i had to decide between him and a more conservative republican, i would have to think about that one.

I hate that too. Thats why I'm not registered to either party. I mean, you want the best canidate in the white house, not the best party. There have been numerous presidents on both sides of the party divide who are good, that is why I vote for the best canidate.

Because when you're only given two viable choices, you pick the lesser of two evils. Conservatives and liberals obviously have differing views on which evil is lesser.
