the best way to learn how to skateboard is to watch other people. if you hang around skateboarders, you will become a great skateboarder. Also, don't be afraid to get hurt. that happens a lot. just get back up and keep trying the trick you want. the first step would be to learn the Ollie. then work up from there!
Good luck : )

Start from the top! The top of a long steep hill or street then simply jump on! Sink or swim, make it to the bottom and you will be a skateboarder for life however if you don't it was never meant to be.

Lots of practice, it seems that no books or videos can replace good, hard work. Not that I can skateboard, I've tried a few times but never wanted to practice for fear of embarassment of tripping and falling so much

On smooth pavement. Wear pertection so you wont be to affraid of falling. Knee pads, elbow, and wrist are the big ones. Helmet is a must. Just skate and skate till you scrape the hell out of the pads!!! Have someone with you every once and a while to teach you technique and in no time you will be skating with the best of them.

On a carpeted surface. The fristion slows you down enough to where you would feel saffe and start to control your environment. The hardest part is the balance of course, and the carpet slows it down

I would think just getting on one and pushing off, just like learning to ride a bike. Go for it!
