Why can't I type or see text in Halo 1 for PC?

I just bought Halo: Combat Evolved for PC a few days ago and seems like I have a problem. I cannot type anything and I cannot see any text either (the text that shows who killed who and who said what). Can anyone help me with this?

My Halo version is 1.07 and I go by the alias "X-Blaster."

i think 1.07 is the latest patch, because thats what the game downloaded for me (and a month or 2 ago, i saw 1.07 being the latest patch).

my controls are fine. when i press the key, the bottom of the screen becomes a little shaded but doesnt say "Chat:" or "Team Chat:" or whatever.... i press random keys and press Enter, but my friend doesnt see the message. and i cant see any1 else' message either.

Try D-Loading the latest patch. Also there is probably a key you need to press to chat. Look under misc. controls.
