15 minutes ago my cat came in yeowling for me to close the cat flaps - didn't know what he was on about - but I did it, as the black clouds were mounting fast.
5 minutes ago a fairly viscous squall hit us.
He had noticed something I hadn't.
Have you a "pet story" about their senses?

Amazing response - wish my Escallonia question had done as well.
Anyway - my cat says that he is happy to provoke such interest, and will nominate a best answer in the morning.

My cat says that he can't possibly nominate a best answer as there are so many good ones, and he suggests I put it to a vote, as he is better at predicting the weather than typing!

I suppose cats can sense weather changes before we can (animals usually have good instincts about stuff like that), but they can't really tell you what's going to happen. "Meow" could mean anything from "let me outside so I can lay in the sun" to "we need to take cover because a tornado is coming."

To answer your question, only the psychic ones! XD
Seriously, though, there could be something about your cat coming in right before a thunderstorm. Animals are thought to have sensitivity to weather, such as cows. If they are lying down while it is raining, the rain will go on for a while, because the cow may think, 'I'm going to get wet anyway, so I shall stay here.' :P

Yes. A very sad one. Not a single animal was found in the wake of the Asian tsunami. We've lost the sensitivity to changes in the weather. It comes of having lived apart from nature for too long, and missing the subtle clues, like changes in air pressure, temperature, humidity, sounds...

yes @ weather.
cats can also tell if an earthquake is on the way.
about 17 years ago, a minor earthquake hit britain. my cat at the time had been running around the house very agitatedly, and soon afterwards, the windows shook with the tremour we all felt. he was normally very cool and aloof this cat of mine, but the impending mini earthquake shook him up before it actually happened...maybe he felt the pre tremours before we humans saw the windows shaking.
therefore, you could say felines are walking talking seismometers aswell as being good at predicting storms.

Cats can be sensitive to air pressure changes (which often happen before storms). They can't 'predict' the weather as in "it's going to be partly sunny" or "flood watch" or "tornado warning"...
However, if (for example) a storm is coming and the air pressure rapidly changes (as it does before a storm) they might be able to sense that. That's often why cats/dogs/many animals will often hide or 'freak out' before the storm is apparent.
This is also how some people can tell a storm is coming because they can "feel it in their toe, or elbow, or whatever". Something may have effected their joint which cause it to 'act up' to the change in air pressure that is accompanied by a storm.

nicely, there are some myths that as quickly as you seize a cat licking itself, it means theres going to be rain. Cats CAN assume organic disaters even nevertheless. They act in yet differently if a organic catastrophe is springing up.

I don't know about predicting the weather but I do know that cats can hear thunder sooner than we can, and my cat Moses is afraid of thunder. He runs and hides from it. He can sense the storm long before it gets to us.

Well cat's can't predict weather but they can notice the changes in nature and hear louder frequencies than us. Their natural instincts warn them of natural predicaments better than ours. After all they don't have a weather-man they can trust.

Many people believe that cats can sense the weather. If you or I can sense it "in our bones" or "smell the rain in the air" I see no reason why Fluffy should not be able to.

I think so... in a way. Especially large storms.
Did you hear about the animals that were running and trampling people right before the tsunami hit Sri Lanka?

yes, everytime it pisses down,my cat has almost a sixth sense. He gets soaked, comes bombing through the cat flap and looks really fed up till I've dried the poor little sod off.His sixth sense?... He knows I've got a towel.
Cat's understand the towel theory,people don't.
