Pre-heat the spider gears before you weld them

It's a bad idea. The car will be harder to turn because the differential is not letting the inside rear wheel turn slower when the car is turning. This puts a lot of stress on the differential when the spider gears are welded. If the weld breaks, then the whole differential gear assembly will be ruined. The same goes for a spool, but it will be stronger, It will just be harder to turn. A spool is mainly meant for track use. Now a locker is the best way to go but as you already know.. the cost is much higher.

Bad idea. You may destroy the ring gear and then you have nothing. Better to locate a limited slip unit in a junk yard or buy a new one outright. By the time you jeri-rig the old set up and go thru the crap to get it there you could have spent the time and money on the real deal and know it will work properly.

If this is strictly off road, I'd go for it. Although I've never done it myself. I was fortunate to have lockers on my truck from the factory.

If it primarily on road, with the occasional weekend blast thru the mud, I'd do it right. Turning a corner gets a lot of attention from tire squal, squal, squal, squal.
Also, your truck will handle like crap.

I've allways been told "If you're going to do a job, do it right the first time."

in case you'llpersistent on pavement, ignore welding. It motives the two tires to attempt and spin on the comparable speed whilst going around corners. That makes the tires (on the interior the turn) chirp and stresses the axles to the factor of breakage.
