The new shrubs on either side of this plant are doing fine.

It has a bug, you're not watering it enough, you're watering it too much, it is especially susceptible to the heat or direct sunlight.

A newly planted shrub is vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Do make sure it has ample water. If it got too dry and many leaves have fallen off, new growth may appear later. It there any chance of gopher damage? If not, consider yourself lucky and keep newly planted shrubs watered.

perhaps the plant is getting either too much sun or not enough. Are you watering the plant enough? It may need some new top soil to surround it and some plant food. Good Luck.

Check to see if you planted it in an ant hill. I had this happen once. The ants can kill a plant.

could be a lack of calcium in the soil thus causing blossom end rot, or it may be getting too much water or too little as well
