I own a strat and I like to play heavy metal but it never sounds dark enough. I know that the single coil pickups arent as powerfull as humbuckers but I have a dark sounding strat before. I can't figure it out . I'm rythem Guitar in a band so I need to know asap. My strat is a standard 3 single coil with a 5 way selector two tone and 1 volume. My amp has overdrive, bass and trebble control.

Try using pedals first and if you still can't find the right amp/effect combination, try switching your bridge pick-up to an active pick-up like an EMG, or if you can afford it,just buy another guitar that has better quality of wood for a thicker sound

Try different effects on pedals that are available at your local guitar shop. Danelectro has TONS of different pedals that produce different effects and are pretty reasonable cost wise. There are plenty of pedals out there, demo them at your guitar shop until you find the sound you want. Make certain to bring your guitar as each guitar may sound a little different with each pedal. Have fun...and good luck!
