First hand experience! I went from a G cup to a D in December of 2004. The surgeon took off 13 1/2 pounds from me - he said it was the largest reduction he had ever done. I had three compressed vertebrae, was in constant pain and was tired of being gawked at. By far the best thing I've ever done. I was off work for three weeks. The first couple of days are painful, especially if you drainage tubes. Because the tubes are inserted into you, shifting positions can make you sore. They give you narcotic painkillers and your best bet is rest. I propped myself up on pillows, watched movies and just slept. My surgery was performed on Friday. My drainage tubes were removed on Wednesday (warning, when they pull them, it hurts like hades, but only briefly, once they're gone, the pain is pretty much over!). I took painkillers on Wednesday and Thursday morning. After that, it was plain Tylenol! I was a bit tired, but it really didn't hurt. Because of the stitches, they don't want you exercising or lifting anything. My Mum came to stay with me and took care of everything.
The relief in my back was immediate. Within two weeks post-surgery, my vertebrae had completely decompressed. I do have some scarring on my sides and underneath because he removed a huge amount of tissue, but the results are so stunningly beautiful! I still look in the mirror all the time and admire them, they're perky and cute! Thanks to the small ridge of scar tissue underneath, they will never sag. My surgeon also gave me a breast lift "since he was there anyway". I had full sensation back in all areas within three months.
If you have any back pain, it will automatically be covered by your insurance. I spoke to my insurance company and the representative told me it needed to get done as soon as possible because of my back problems. I picked a brilliant plastic surgeon on my HMO (he was recommended to me) and it cost me $125 out of pocket - and that included my six follow up visits.
Its amazing how wonderful it feels to have someone look in my eyes when they're talking to me now. No more "you should be a stripper" comments and people talking to your breasts. No more back pain. You can wear clothes you never dreamed of wearing before. Its truly amazing. Good luck to you! It will change your life. It definitely changed mine.

I have yet to BFAR (we're trying now--my surgery was almost two years ago), but I already have one son whom I BF. I had the surgery after doing a huge amount of research. I was a 36J with a pretty small body structure (after surgery, I'm still around a 36D and I had 6 and 1/2 pounds removed). The weight of my breasts was beginning to cause problems with the disks in my lower back. I was in extreme pain all the time, and the doctors were telling me that I should not get pregnant again because that would likely cause irreversible damage. I tried every alternative I could find, including pain medication, physical therapy, back supports, specialty bras (at $60 per bra), and chiropractic care three times a week. After my surgery, I have been literally pain-free.
All that said, I still wonder how I will feel when I start to BFAR my next child. After the joy of breastfeeding my first child, I am painfully aware of what I may have lost. However, when I consider how much more I have been able to participate in my son's life, and how much nicer a person I am now that I'm not in pain all the time, I think it was worth it for me.
I would never recommend the surgery to someone who is not dealing with extreme pain. If there are other reasons for the surgery, they can probably wait until they are done having children. After all, if you are concerned enough to research this, you will probably be deeply disappointed if you have problems with BFAR (and most have some problems or concerns, even if they ultimately don't need to supplement). As far as self-esteem issues, I have a husband who assures me he loves my new breasts and wouldn't change them for anything, yet I still wonder many times if he misses "the old me."
To sum it all up, a breast reduction is not something that will just fix all your problems. It will leave you scarred, and it will leave you wondering if you did the right thing. If you're dealing with pain, it might take it away, but it might not. If you're dealing with self-esteem issues, it might help, or it might not. Or perhaps it may help in the short term, but later cause you more concerns. If you do decide to have the surgery, this is a great group of women to help you through any issues you might face.
Ultimately you have to make the decision for yourself, but just make sure you have thoroughly weighed out all the consequences.

I had 36DDD (which the bra was still a bit too small for). I had a reduction in 1990 (down to a B/C, have since leveled out at a C) and it was the best decision I ever made. I had 5.5 pounds taken off. I'd had problems with straps cutting into my shoulders, back pain, sleeping difficulty.
There's no guarantee they'll be perfect. There's a lot of cutting involved and of course putting it all back together! Be sure to get recommendations on plastic surgeons who will do a good job for you.
I have absolutely ZERO regret over it! I can wear normal clothes, and guys actually seem to know what color my eyes are now. ;-)

I had a 34FF and I'm now a 34C.
I had my reduction surgery just a little over two months ago. I am thrilled with the results and it has changed my life! I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this surgery. The recovery was easy and I'm so happy now!
