Or a good meal for someone who has already passed a stone?

Someone who has recently passed a stone needs to worry more about fluid intake than what they are eating. Foods should be high in acid content, this minimizes the crystalline stones forming from salts and minerals. But at least 2 liters of fluid a day needs to be the rule. I recommend cranberry juice and grape juice.

Having had stones in 3 times the past, there are some dietary changes that have helped me. First was reducing salt / sodium. I don't necessarily seek out low-sodium foods, but I do not add any salt to food any more and I watch my intake. I read an article some time ago that implicated higher sodium with increased incidences of stones. I also increased my magnesium intake by taking a supplement several times a day with meals. If the stones are calcium oxylate, the magnesium tends to bind with calcium somewhat inhibiting their formation. Of course, drinking lots of water (some distilled, too) is a must.

Unfortunately, kidney stones form early in life and show up later to cause us grief. Diet to prevent kidney stones has to be done early in life during childhood. Some of the things that cause kidney stones are milk and chocolate, i.e. hot chocolate. Children do not have the capacity to absorb these two things combined.
Also, some stones occur due to genetic disposition.
After surgery, all that can be done is to try and prevent FUTURE stones by avoiding excess iron & protein.

He needs to drink lots of water. Kidney stones are usually formed when the person doesn't drink enough water allowing the minerals to collect in the kidneys and form stones. Cut down on the sodas to maybe 1 a day and make sure he drinks about 8 glasses of water througout the day. This will help to flush those minerals out.

Lots of fluids. There are different causes of stones and depending on whatcaused them, decide what you should eat. ie.
some are caused by too much protein, others too much stomach acid etc.
