St. John's Wort is a simple mood elevator, no more. I have used it for years. It is effective in cases of mild to moderate depression, with no side effects. It is NOT a mood stabilizer and would be ineffective to treat bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is difficult to treat but there are meds out there that help. Best advice: see a professional, be evaluated and follow his or her recommendations. The key to success is to be consistent in taking meds. Many people with this condition abandon the meds when they start to feel better, and the cycle resumes.

ST. JOHN'S WORT, FOR DEPRESSION IS GREAT, BUT BIPOLAR/MANIC DEPRESSION MIGHT BE TOO MUCH FOR IT; I'D SAY TRY TO SEE A PROFESSIONAL; I AGREE WITH keepsondancing; MY BROTHER IS MANIC DEPRESSIVE & HAS TO BE ON LITHIUM, BUT LIKE ANOTHER ANSWERER WROTE YOU START TO FEEL BETTER & THEN HE GOES OFF OF IT, ALSO; THERE'S THAT INCONSISTENCY---MY GUYS WERE ADHD & DR.S HAD THEM ON RITILIN, FORGET THAT STUFF--THE REBOUND EFFECT FROM THAT WAS WORSE THAN THE ADHD. WISH I COULD HELP MORE, BUT DEFINITELY WILL PRAY ABOUT THIS! OK.
