"kanye west - the college dropout

First, quote the z-heavy opening four lines of the biggest single, "Through the Wire," off Kanye West's debut album: "I drink a Boost for breakfast, an Ensure for dizzert/Somebody ordered pancakes I just sip the sizzurp/That right there could drive a sane man bizzerk/Not to worry the Mr. H to the Izz-O's back to wizzerk." Next, commence detailed analysis of The College Dropout based solely on these four lines.

West is sticking to liquids because he is literally singing these lines through a jaw that's wired shut. He wrote "Through the Wire" during the aftermath of a near-fatal car accident on his way home from the studio. The most consistent theme of College is perseverance through adversity, well-documented by West's ability to turn his tragedy into this MTV hit. No matter what, West wants you to have a good time with him—possibly while grooving together.

As for line two, West can down "sizzurp" with the best mustached state troopers in all of Vermont because that's his style. He burps out syrupy, soulful tunes like he's sitting around the big table at the I-Hop on Lake Park after going to 10 a.m. service at 49th and Dorchester. Even for those who can't appreciate West's plethora of shout-outs to Chicago (South Side, wha what??), his flow and his production style—usually based on well-utilized samples from old R&B hits—will invoke images of big family breakfasts, butter, and church. Except for a few Timbaland-inspired beats, on College, West wisely sticks to the flavorful formula that has helped him produce mega-hits for the likes of Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, and Talib Kweli.

While the addictive, sugar-drenched beats almost force you to move, the lyrics on College will drive any "sane man bizzerk." Besides the ridiculously over-abundant and only rarely funny skits, the biggest flaw on College is the inexplicable hypocrisy in the lyrics. Trying hard to please everyone and walk the mid(West) line between the mainstream and the underground—the "Benz" and the "backpack" if you will—West includes bizarre, contradictory plugs for dealing drugs, not doing drugs, materialism, anti-materialism, anti-intellectualism, and dropping out of school completely that simply confuse the close listener. At times, it's as if West couldn't decide if he wanted to be ironic or not; at other times, it's as if he just isn't sure what his opinion is or what he's talking about.

Despite these disastrous attempts at thematic congruity, The College Dropout does achieve the allusive mainstream/underground crossover appeal of albums from performers such as Outkast and Radiohead, and yet again, our passage-selected-for-close-analysis reveals some of the reasons for this success. The accentuated delivery ("an En-shure for dizzert") and wit of the opening lines of "Through the Wire" balance the heavy "be ambitious and persevere" message nicely. At the same time, the danceable, Top 40 quality of West's beats—the classic "Slow Jamz" and the Candyland-infectious "We Don't Care" make you wanna stutter-step and dance with your thumbs up even more than "Wire"—is balanced by the originality and down-to-earth quality of West's persona and production.

The fourth line, "Not to worry the Mr. H to the Izz-O's back to wizzerk," encapsulates West's primary goal in making College: that he deserves recognition for his "wizzerk" as an MC, not just his production on songs such as the referenced Jay-Z track. The hitmaker is out to prove that he is not a producer-rapper but both in equal parts. And, despite its obvious flaws and foibles, College succeeds in this goal. West's flow is, to borrow a phrase from the equally soulful Count Bass-D, "quite buttery." Despite guest-spots from top tier MCs like Jay-Z, Kweli, and fellow-Chicagoan Common, West's lyrics are never overshadowed, often funny, and always enjoyably familiar. In particular, "Get By"—the collaboration with Kweli and Common—is an essential track for all hip-hop enthusiasts for the content of the lyrics as well as the ridiculous ways in which all three MCs vary their deliveries."

Being completely honest and non cynical, do you really think this a valuable answer? If you are serious do you really think that this is not just a quick fix, that losing weight is a life style change. Once wiring your mouth shut, what would stop you from drinking a Venti breve, extra caramel - caramel machiatto for breakfast, then having a large McDonald's milkshake for lunch and and then maybe you try to be healthy and drink a large fruit blended thingie from a smoothie shop for dinner, when in reality its made with added sugar, sorbet, and sweetened fruit. Sure you couldn't eat the burger and fries everyday and have a pint of ice cream as a midnight snack, but you will still have that sweet craving. I am by no means a model type, but I understand moderation and exercise, eating all natural, organic (when I can), and cutting red meat out of my diet. These are lifestyle changes.
