There are different opinions about that. There is an ESPN show about with that title. The most recent winner I saw is a man from Poland with a difficult name to remember. It's Mariusz P...ski. I don't think these guys on this show are really strongest. Weightlifting and powerlifting champions are better candidates for that. It is more difficult to keep up with news in these contests than it once was. I buy barbell mags often, but they no longer carry news of most physique contests, let alone lifting. Anthony Clark set some powerlifting records that will be hard to equal. I'll vote for him until I see news that someone has beaten his records. I wrote an essay titled "Fortissimus" (Latin for "The Strongest"). The five great strongmen 1865-1965 are Louis Cyr of Canada, Louis Uni of France, Karl Swaboda of Austria, Hermann Goerner of Germany and Paul Anderson of the USA. Cyr's Backlift record of 4133 lbs. stood 1891-1957. Uni's "unliftable barbell" has been lifted by only three men since his retirement. Swaboda was the first man to lift 400+ lbs, overhead. His 441 lbs, press stood as a record 1912-1964. Goerner Deadlifted 727 lbs, with one hand and no one has ever equalled that. Anderson set many records, e.g.beating or equalling some of Cyr's, Swaboda's and Goerner's records. I met Paul and saw him lift. At 5'10", 375 lbs., he was built like a gorilla. He lived 1933-1994. I weigh 285 lbs. and have Squatted with 800 lbs.and Bench Pressed 600 lbs. in training, but Paul Anderson dwarfed me.
