You have run into some lousy customers who "look down" on your because they're lousy people. Most customer don't look down at you at all.
People go to fast-food places because its fast and because its cheap and sometimes because its easy to find one or because the food is the same whether you're in California or New Jersey, unlike if they go to some local place. So why they go there has nothing to do with whether they look down on any employees.
Most people figure you're either a student or a mother who likes that she can get hours that go well with having kids in school or that you're a retired person who got bored or that you may have wanted to get a job that offered promotions to management or any other number of respectable things - or else they don't really think much about you at all as long as their coffee is the way they like it.
Sometimes, though, fast-food places get a bad name because, for example, a person (me) can ask for no ketchup every time they go there and may have gone to fast-food places for years. That person may know that about 80% of the time the sandwich has ketchup on it even though the wrapper may have a "no ketchup" (W/O ketchup) sticker on it. I'm not exaggerating. Sometimes - along with something like that - there are times when the food is either not entirely cooked or else cooked so much one can't bite it without worrying out breaking teeth.
The coffee tends to be bad in these places, and customers do wonder why the management can't figure out that they're serving coffee that tastes like cough medicine much of the time.
Customers get the feeling that there are at least some fast-food people who are new or who are told to hurry, and the general expectation in a fast-food place is that there's always going to be something a little wrong with the meal . A customer can get the feeling that even the most hard-working, well-meaning employee just may forget the salad dressing or throw the wrong sandwich in a bag. As a result, yes, fast-food has a reputation of coming with its "risks".
People who keep going back accept those "risks" because fast-food offers other conveniences.
In spite of the realities of some of the mistakes or burned coffee or ketchup on sandwiches that isn't supposed to be there, trust me on this - most people do not look down on you or think they're better because they make more money. There are a few jerks that are more noticeable than the non-jerks that think that way when it comes to your work; and then, too, there are some people who are jerks no matter where they go. It has nothing to do with the fast-food thing.
I, personally, have always been tremendously appreciative when I am able to run into my local fast-food place and get a nice, hot breakfast without having to cook it myself and dirty up pans early in the morning.
You don't have an easy job. Just know that fewer people than you think look down on you, and the ones who do are just jerks. Don't even pay attention to such jerks.

I never look down at anyone at any type of restaraunt cheap or not. But if the employee, fast food or not acts like they have something better to do than just give me the service I deserve. That's when I look down on them for not finding another job that makes them happier.

When I worked downtown, and for employers, they gave us very little time to eat lunch, plush we had to walk a few blocks to get to the fast food place, and then stand in line. I never looked down at a worker, heck, I wasn't getting paid much more.
I've also eaten at a different fast food place that was near the laundromat, so while my stuff washed, I ate.

Because they are cheap lazy buggers!! If anyone should be looking down on someone it is us on them because they are the pathethic loosers that feel the need to eat at fast food resturants several times a day because they can't get off their fat butts and cook something for themselves!!

People are being brought up that way from birth these days. If your not the best then their must be something wrong with you. Or the attitude of if I don't look out for myself first then no one else is going to. So what ever I do I must make sure people take care of me otherwise I must teat them badly.
It's attitudes like that that make me crazy.
I always try to treat anyone who has to interact with the public with the respect I would like to be treated with. But unfortuneatly not everyone feels that way.
Best of Luck

Don't ever feel bad about doing a hard days work. The people who want to feel superior to those who work manual labor, are normally the ones whose parents paid for their college education.
