i had a 10foot conifer hedge about 48foot long. Lush green and healthy. I have just had a gardener in to cut 3-4 foot off the top and trim sides. Well, they have been cut right back all over, now see through, and are just brown dead dusty leaf things. Has any idea if these will recover. They look really bad no green at all.

With conifers, you only cut the tips, if the branches are cut into they do not usually grow back, Cutting the tips thickens them up. I love conifers have them everywhere, and when you get those brown section they do look awful, you may have to replant.

You usually don't cut that much off at one time.
to keep a hedge you need to cut back a bit every year not 3 -4 feet in one year and you need to trim in between the hedges to get the shrub bushy but If they have no green they will not recover

if they are cut back , get full sun and have some green they may recover

Sounds like you didn't hire huys who know what they are doing, I hope it wasn't expensive cuz it will be to replace the hedge.

yes as the other two people said, it is doubtful it will recover - i have cut hedges before and it is a rule of thumb to never scalp the hedge. these areas can be brown forever. an option may be to plant some my shrubs in the bad holes to fill them in, and maintain them to the size you whish. Always insure the people you contract to do your work know what they are doing.
