I have created a jpeg out of different photos (a photo montage) on Photoshop but cannot get rid of the white background. I would like to insert the jpeg on top of an existing webpage. How do I get the background transparent? And please, I am a layman, so be as clear as possible. Thank you!!

If the background of your image is primarily white, then do the following:
1. Open the image as-is (jpeg format)
2. File > Save for Web...
3. Choose "GIF"
4. Set Dither to "100%"
5. Check "Transparency" box and save the image.

I don't believe you can. Once the background is set to white and you have flattened the pic you are stuck... The only way I know is to open a new file with transparent background. Then highlight only those areas you want to copy using the magic wand. Copy and paste. Experiment with the different wands to get only the areas you want. Don't forget you can hit the ADD button and not have to hold down the control key.. You can also hit the SUBTRACT button to remove areas you don't want.

If you need more help drop me a line.. plehne@earthlink.net
Or send me the file and I'll do it for ya...

Good Luck

i would (tho im not photoshop savy) save the image as a jpeg. go file new and there is an option to make the background transparent. do that and click open. insert your jpeg and use the magic wand tool to highlight the white and just press delete. i think its that simple.

You cannot have transparencies on a JPEG (Not for you what you want it for anyways). You need to save the image in a format that keeps alpha channels separate. You also need to save them as an image that can be viewed on the web. PNGs, TARGAs and GIFs are the most common types. GIFs are the most used on the internet, and are always compaitble. JPEGs are for photographs.

you can:
a) erase it with the eraser tool
b)mask it and paint it out (this process, while easy, requires a lot of explaination... but it is the best option)
c) make it a multiply layer, but then all of your light colors will show through
d)if it is a plain white background you are trying to rmove, use the magic wand, clik on the while and delete... or for better results, after it is selected, make it a mask and invert it... then you can paint the leftovers out... (how to do this depends on what version of photoshop you have)
e) cut it out with the lasso tool
f)pen tool an outline around what you want, when finished, go to "paths" clik the path, save it as a different name, selct the path, (control/clik on it) the "marching ants shoud appear around the path, click on the button in the bottom of the (paths/layers) pallette "add a layer mask" it is the grey bos w/a white circle in the middle...

that is the easiest way to add a mask btw... sellect the layer you want to cut out, clik the little layer mask button at the bottom of the layers pallete... it will add a white box next to the layer in the pallette... clik on that box, and use the bruch tool (black) to remove, White to add)

sorry i can't explain it clearer

You can use the layer tool if you have not merged all the images yet. The background is usually layer number 1. You would select that layer and insert your background.
