I'm usually good at these types of things but I make careless mistakes which end up to hurt my grade, what should I do different?

Study. Work lots of problems. Double check yourself all the time. I've been a mathematician for forty years and I *still* drop terms, multiply 3*5 and get 8, etc. etc.

That's also the reason you should show your work on tests. If you set the problem up and solve it correctly except for an obvious 'finger fumble' in the last line, most Teachers will give you like 80 or 90 percent credit (I know I always did). But if all you put down is a number and it's wrong, the Teacher doesn't really have a lot to work with

And don't try to 'cram' the night before. Get a good nights sleep and eat a good breakfast. And don't go on marathon 'study binges' for 10 hours. Very few people can maintain focus for more then 30 - 45 minutes. Take a short break (10-15 minutes) and then go back to it.

You should probaly study alot and get alot of sleep. And on the test day have a good breakfast because that will get your mind going. Also check your answers and have your mom or dad make a practice test every night untill the test day. That always helps me!

I used to eat an apple before tests to think clearer. No guarantees.
