You can usually install the RAM through an access point on the underneath of the system. On some computers, the panel screws on, while others just slip open. Just remove the panel and install the new memory.

RAM is one of the more delicate parts of a system, so if you have any doubts, just take it somewhere (not Best Buy, they charge a ton for it). It only takes about 5 minutes to install, so you may find a generous soul willing to do it for cheap.

compaq laptops are easy to upgrade the ram if you just do one sitck. To get dual channel you need to run two sticks of the same speed and size. So if you want to upgrade to 1GB by means of two 512MB sticks it gets tricky. Compaq only makes one of the bays easy to access. That is the one that is on the bottom. The other is difficult to get to. The second ram slot is usually underneath the keyboard. You have to remove a few panels to get that off as well. You can find a guide on hewlett packards website. HP owns compaq and some of their models are similar. Search for your specific model and find the upgrade or installation guide. There are instructions there. If this is above your head, don't worry. Take it to a smaller local computer shop. Avoid best buy, circuit city etc... because they way overcharge. Unless you get a deal on a sale where they upgrade your ram for free if you purchase it there.

Its really easy and should not void your warranty. Open up the memory bay and you should see that they just spring up so you can remove and replace them.
