I always ask four questions (1) What is your budget (2) what you want to do with it and (3) After how many years do you plan to change it (4) When is the last DATE you absolutely have to buy the laptop.
Assuming you want to buy one before the end of the month, I will probably advise you just to get the cheapest laptop with 1GB memory available out there and to spend the rest of the money on onsite warranty and accessories like a decent carry case and a second battery.
Dell and Acer have very decent offers. The only comparable processor that pops to mind is the Turion x2 from AMD, although it is not as economical and as cheap.
Look also for the Core Duo, first generation which is not bad as well.
If you can wait till the end of the year, you might get some very exquisite Hybrid drives available on the mrket which will slast the bootup time and will be an important part of Microsoft Vista assault on mobile market.

Sounds like you are impatient and want quick boot. If you are not buying immediately you might wait for the laptops that will have FLASH based boot for the new VISTA OS in 2007. Other than that you might figure out what you need to use the laptop 5 minutes ahead of time and turn it on and go do something else and come back and it will have booted.
Most applications people run load very quickly so other than the boot period there should not be much waiting.
I'd concentrate more on the features that are important ... battery life, screen size, keyboard, weight, etc. Once you have decided what is important then check out Dell, Toshiba and IBM models that seem to meet your needs. IBM and Toshiba make the best laptops and Dell does the most marketing, so is best known. I'd go with a Toshiba as they are usually state of the art.

I'd say a Mac Book Pro, but it doesn't look like you have enough cash. Get a Refurbished Ibook. They will honor their year warranty too. I got one and so did my friend for 750.
