As this can only be based on opinion anyway...I don't believe anyone will ever, ever come close to Jimi Hendrix as far as the electric guitar goes...many people haven't heard his blues or even know he played it and based a lot of his music on it. To be as brilliant as he was at such a young age (he didn't start playing guitar until age 15--he was left-handed and started by playing a right-handed guitar upside down) and to have left such a collection by the time he died at age 27...and left such an imprint on the foundation of rock and even hip hop and rap...what can I say, I'm in love with a dead man. If you get a chance, listen to his purple box set "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" and you'll hear a lot of amazing stuff. Sorry, I can't pick just one song.

I would pick the Grateful Dead. They were extremely creative and innovative. They never played the same show twice or played a song the exact same way. They were always improvising and going where the music wanted to take them. Their music takes me to a happy place, ("sunshine and daydreams") though I can't really pick one favorite song. "Box of Rain", "St. Stephen", "Touch of Grey", "Casey Jones", or "Friend of the Devil" might fit the description.
Sadly, I was too young to appreciate their music fully while they were touring (before Jerry died in '95), so I never got to see them live. I kick myself alot for that. Luckily, I have been able to at least see Bob Weir and Phil Lesh perform solo.

I really like Phil Collins. I grew up on his music when he was in Genesis and then when he went solo. (I'm 28) I just love his work - it touches me in ways I don't expect. And when I re-listen to songs, the memories just flood back. I've never been to a concert, ironically, but I own most of his CDs and I've heard the concerts are very good.
