I bought a Samsung x640 cell from ebay. When I turn it on it says Vodafone. I have a Cingular Sim card. The phone says no service. If I try to dial it it says no network. Is this phone usable?

your phone is locked. call up the service provider and tell and try to get the code out of them. say your going on a long trip over seas and you want the code so you can get a new sim in another country. if you dont see an option to input a code, then go online and there are ways to "hack" your phone to making it unlucked. make sure if you buy a phone on ebay, it says unlocked or has your service compatability.

It's possible the phone was stolen, which would mean that cingular will never activate it.

Take it to a cingular store and get it hooked up.

It dosent sound like its compatible. I found out that the phones on ebay have to be "" and compatible with the carrier. "Unlocked" meaning its not strictly a phone programed for a specific cell phone company.

Check the network area at Cingular.com. It could be they do not service your area.

It could be defective! My dad bought one from Ebay and he complained and sent it back and bought one from somewhere else

you probably still need to have it programed for your service provider. If you have sprint - take it there, same for alltel etc...
