I, myself stopped breastfeeding when one of my daughters was 13 months and the other was 5 months. I know of other mothers who have breastfed much longer and ones that decided not to at all. What are your thoughts on this? How long is too long?

Breastfeeding is a personal choice. There is no right or wrong answer. Breastfeed as long as you can and want to, whether it's just a few days, several weeks, 3 months, 6 months, a year, whatever. Any amount of breastmilk is better than none at all. Breastfeeding can be difficult (especially without support from your friends, family and employer) but if you can get any amount of breastfeeding in, your baby will be healthier for it.

I do think that everyone ought to try breastfeeding before they decide not to (unless it is medically impossible). Breastfeeding is the most healthy for the baby and, after it is well established, much easier (no mixing, no warming bottles in the middle of the night). It's also alot cheaper.

I personally believe that it is up to the mother. I breastfed my son until he was 10 months. My plan was until he was 1 year since his pediatrician highly recommended it. But when he started to get teeth I just couldn't handle it any more. So I feel that when the mother feels that it is right that is the best time to ween the baby. Breastfeeding is both a bonding and special time for the mother and the child. And that is exactly what it should be an experience for them both to enjoy.

It is personal choice and I really do not believe in a time when one 'should' stop. I do believe that a child should be breastfed exclusively for 6 months and then continue for at least a year. But after that, whatever is comfortable for mother and child - and only the mother and child; not aunts, grandparents, waitresses in restaurants or strangers on the street.
My son is 26 months and still breastfeeding. We will stop when we stop.

Kindegarten or first grade might be pushin it a bit!! lol
But really - I think as long as the baby wants to nurse anywhere from 16 months to 2 years would be ideal. I believe that you should nurse for as long as you can - the benefits to the baby are just incredible. I nursed my son for 8 months - we hit a rough patch & instead of working through it, which I wish I had, we stopped. My daughter did NOT like nursing, so she only got four months. She much preferred formula & thrived on it! That whole flap over the baby nursing on the cover of Baby Talk magazine is just ridiculous - stars go out with next to nothing on, people pay to see celebrities' breasts, but let a magazine feature a baby nursing & the country goes into outrage?? What's wrong with this picture?? I thoroughly enjoyed nursing & have even thought about becoming a lactation consultant. I thought I would even like to get my milk flow started again & pump & donate to a breast milk bank! It would be helping babies, & I think it's so important for them to get the best. But that might be taking it too far . . .
it should be a decision the mother makes, when to stop.

When Should I Stop Breastfeeding

EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING:
Give only breast milk till the baby is 6 months old. Water, top milk, honey, vitamins, almonds, fruit juices or any other item should not be given during this period. These will interfere with breastfeeding and may introduce infection. Mother’s milk contains enough water. Hence even in summer, an infant does not require water.

Gripe water, Balkadu, tonics for teething or any other similar preparations are unnecessary and can be dangerous. Hence these items should not be given.
WEANING:
Around the end of 6 months gradually introduce the child to family meals. However continue to breastfeed until the second birthday.
