similar to their land dwelling cousins they are scavengers and ominvoris.. they will eat plant and animal matter. They will eat algae on the rocks and within the substrate as well as fish waste.. uneatten food and anything else that they find including a dead fish or other crab. Normally you do not have to feed them if housed with fishes because they will find plenty to eat.. if you feed them then they will not do their cleaning job because they are known as great tank clearners. If housed by themselves, a tank of just hermit crabs, then you can feed them an sinking fosh food, get some that either contain both vegetable/plant matter and meat or animal fish products. Donot over feed so then they will clean the tank well.

We have marine hermit crabs and they pick at the algae on the live rock, plus we give them leaves of romaine lettuce. Run the lettuce under hot water first for a minute or two to soften it, then anchor it. We put it on a shell w/ a rubber band.

Anything that has meat on it and falls to the bottom. Crabs are scavengers and eat what other critters leave behind.
We use to catch them in the ocean with a piece of meat tied to a string and you could feel them pulling on the string and once they latch on they don't let go so you pull the line and scoop them up in a net. Crabs are mighty tasty with butter and garlic!!

Assuming that it's a blue or rock crab, It would eat most anything that you put in front of it, (live or dead). Just as long as it's meat and uncooked they'll eat it. Like anything else it will take on the general flavor of what it eats the most of. If you want it to taste like chicken, then feed it chicken and so forth.

To feed small crabs, I would suggest giving them shredded lettuce, or grated carrot. For something small, give them a small food. Plus, if you visit a pet shop, they usually have a food for all pets.
