I answer that question: "I'm indifferent. Use what's handy." or "Got any bags made of porpoise hide?"

In truth, I'm NOT indifferent: I bring my own bag when I think of it in time, made of some cheap fiber (cotton, mainly, but I suspect there's some polyester in there, too). When I buy produce I do NOT use the roll of plastic bags conveniently offered, but I roll my fifteen little red spuds, an onion, and a cabbage head all over the conveyor belt. It amuses me, and (I believe) it also supplies a little diversion for the people who tote it up and toss my groceries in my bag.

I bring my own bag because I just don't like waste, and single-use products (like flimsy bags of whatever material) are wasteful. Perhaps there's an Amish lurking in my family woodpile.

I put up with paper wrap on bacon. All the alternatives I can imagine are pretty messy or dangerously unhygienic.

But I don't make an issue of it. I'm kinda sorry to see the question made into an issue, as it often is. Moral outrage over the choice of bags? Come, now, surely there are more important matters--but, no, you can see it any day you want to see it: How you answer "Paper or plastic?" declares your tribe, marks you as friend or foe, husband of the earth or despoiler, etc.

Was I out of the room when that happened? Apparently. It amazes me now.

Paper, although it does take trees to make paper, most paper products are recycled.

Plastic bags take years to disintegrate if ever! There is such a problem with them in San Francisco they charge you for them each time you go to the grocery store! They were finding seals and other marine animals wrapped up in them.

Paper bags will break down and are easily destroyed.
