You need to eat foods with a lot of protein. Muscles hurt because when they are worked, the small fibers actually break, and when they repair themselves, they grow stronger, but to get them to repair faster, you must provide them with muscle building protein.
And a good heating pad with some Advil couldn't hurt the situation either.

For regular muscle soreness the previous ideas are all good and I would add low intensity aerobic exercise. This promotes circulation, but doesn't tax your system allowing you to recover more quickly. Of course begin and follow this up with gentle prolonged stretching of your major muscle groups and plenty of fluids.
Here are 2 excerpts from EAS Training Articles:
"Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the soreness that occurs 24 to 48 hours after an exercise session and spontaneously decreases after 72 hours. The current theory is that DOMS is caused by microscopic tears to the muscle fibers that occur during eccentric exercise".
"Myths 1. Lactic acid remains in the muscles for hours or even days after strenuous exercise. The truth is that LA rapidly moves out of the muscle cells into the blood stream and LA levels in muscles return to normal (resting) values within 15-30 minutes."

A warm bath is good but a dash of lavender essence in it is better. Lavender is a powerful relaxant. A glass of wine will also help - it will help you relax which will take the strain off your sore muscles. If this doesn't work, have a massage.

Stretch and drink plenty of water. If it is really bad take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen.
