It's sad to watch, but you're going to get a lot of name-calling and mud-slinging from this crowd.

In an attempt at an answer to your question, here's a VERY GENERAL simplification:

Democrats ("leftists," "liberals," or "progressives") believe that how you live your life should be mostly up to you, but that your money and how it is spent should be, to a large extent, up to the government.

Republicans ("conservatives") believe that your money is yours and how you spend it should be mostly up to you, but also that the government should have a say in your life and how you live it.

At their extremes, liberals and conservatives constitute two sides of the same coin: Communists and Fascists; both totalitarian systems.

If you'd like to see where you fall in the political spectrum, I'd suggest "the world's smallest political quiz" at http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz.html

Good luck in your search for meaningful answers!

Neither. Democrats: Raise taxes and get people addicted to subsidies. Republicans: promise to have a smaller government and give it less power. They have created more agencies and UNDER FUND THEM. Both parties HAVE supported Legislation like the Patriot Act destroy the spirit of the US Constitution. and have stolen ideas of the Libertarian Party. The late US Senator Barry Morris Goldwater (1909-1998) would be sick with how Democrats and Republicans have brought Non-Issues into mainstream politics and have divided The United States. Subject: FW: World's Heaviest Element Discovered!

A major research institution (MRI) has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest chemical element yet known to science. The new element has been tentatively named "Governmentium." Governmentium has 1 neutron,12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 225 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 313. These 313 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of governmentium causes one reaction to take over 4 days to complete when it would normally take less than a second. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 years; it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact,
governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause some morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to speculate that governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as "Critical Morass." You will know it when you see it.

Democrats are for the people who can't or won't do for themselves.

Republicans are for the people who did, who do, and/or who will do for themselves.

Democrats are for people that might become dependents on other people and the government.
Republicans are for people that think "if it's meant to be, it's up to me".

Elected Democrats need to be needed and require "victims" to vote for them.
Elected Democrats want to help more people with government tax dollars that were collected by the people that worked for it.
Elected Republicans want people that think people should help people, not governments... or at least, help starts with the individual, then family, then friends, then churches, then other charities and finally governments.

To be non-partisan though, Democrats might truly want to help people improve and help themselves so those people no longer need the government's help but it is fact that you can't help someone that won't help themselves.
Republicans might also want people to help themselves but it does that some amount of money (tax dollars) to run the country.

Someone has to pay for it. The high income earners can't necessarily be left off the hook for those costs because there are people that don't make enough to support themselves besides help pay for the costs of others.

I personally side with Republicans because there can be only so many takers (low income earners) per so many givers (high income earners). At some point, we need to push or nudge the low income earners to earn more so less taxes have to be charged or wasted.

The Republican party and Democrat party are now both socialist crime organizations which are fronts serving the single hidden organization attempting to overthrow the federal government of the United States. They wear liberal and conservative hats or faces to be embraced by as many supporters as possible but they are both controlled by the globalists who view most humans as nothing more than cattle.

The United States Constitution and those who defend her are the only obstacle between them and their objective of worldwide total tyranny such as that depicted in the novel by Orwell: 1984. It will take much courage to win the day. Those who stubbornly continue to believe the lies of the press are unfortunately complicit. without the support of the gullible masses the globalists could not have the power to be a serious threat to mankind's liberty.

republicans are conservatives and democrats are liberals republicans where formed out of the anti-federalist party that opposed the constitution the democrats are the opposite they were first known as federalist and tried to replace the article of confederation to the constitution. The federalist and the anti- federalist existed before the the presidency of george washington he belonged to no political party. He descibed that polititical parties would destroy the nation and he was right, simply republicans are supposed to want every thing to stay the same and democrats want to change thing for the better. what ever they believe to get done.

The Republicans are fat, ugly and stupid. They are the people that you see driving old Ford pickup trucks with confederate flags and bumper stickers that say "Freedom is Not Free." ect. They all shop at WallMart and love war and want tough laws for just about everything. Every time they are elected they ruin the country.

The democrats are the rich suburbanites that drive nice cars, make $50,000 and up a year, send their kids to private colleges and are basically friendly and practical people. They believe in a fair system of government, affordable (or free) health care, gun control and higher taxes on tobacco products. Among other things, they also believe in a woman's right to choose, less harsh sentences for minor drug offences and higher taxes to pay for better schools and hand-outs to the poor.

People often speak of voting as choosing the lesser of two evils, and if you want to look at it that way, than the democrats would be the lesser of the two evils. In reality, however, I hardly see anything evil about the democrats except that they let the Republicans trample all over them every time.

Wow ever want a simple answer to your question?

Traditionally this is the break down of the political parties:

Democrats: believe in high government power, low military emphasis, raising taxes to support social programs, and increase government spending.

Republicans: believe in low government power, high military emphasis, lowering taxes, and lower government spending.

Neither is faith based or race based. Forgive these opinionated people who would use your question as a platform for their own ranting.
Short - sweet - to the point.

Republicans and Democrats are the duopoly the American system of government uses to infringe your rights, destroy your freedom, and waste trillions of dollars of your hard-earned money. They divide among themselves the money they steal and spend it on special federal pension programs that only they and their cohorts are entitled to, while mismanaging your social security fund. Every few years you get to choose a new person who will lie to you and steal from you through a process called voting. Both Democrats and Republicans pass laws that make it impossible for anyone who isn't a member of one of their clubs to be on the ballot, thus insuring an election win for themselves.
