The Equitable bankcard system in the Philippines accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club and JCB.

On my last trip I carried one of each: Visa, MC and AMEX. All three were recognized in the larger cities and in Boracay. However, merchants tend to frown on AMEX because of the higher merchant transaction fees, while Visa/MC issuers tend to tack an extra 1-2% per transaction on top of the 2-3% Visa/MC tack on for FOREX.

In any case, using CCs was my preferred form of payment, followed by cash obtained via ATM. Better FOREX rates than travelers check and safer than exchanging loads of greenbacks at a money changer.

After all these years of traveling back and forth I'm hard pressed to find a merchant outside of the US who accepts Discover Card, so I never bother to carry it on any overseas trips.

Visa and Mastercard are widely used in the Philippines. Amex is starting to gain acceptance but because of the high fees they charge merchants a lot have chosen not to accept it. There are also a few establishments that still accept Diner's Club. Discover Card is not accepted here.

Yes. Many establishments in Manila accept Discover Card. You'll have a harder time in the provinces, though especially the more rural ones like Kalibo.
