Galdiatorial combat had a long history in the Roman Republic and Empire. It is believed the tradition was borrowed from the Etruscans who would hold the games as a type of sacrifice in honor of the deceased during funeral ceremonies.

The first gladiatorial combat in Rome was held in 264 BC and the games were first outlawed by Constantine I in 325 AD. Games were not held constantly during that period but would have been common enough in Rome.

During this period we really have the golden age of the Roman Republic and Empire. The Second and Third Punic wars, The civil war between Marius and Sulla, Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul and subsequent Civil War resulting in the spawning of the Roman Empire under Augustus. There's really too much to list, we're talking about an extremely important era in the history of Rome.

Nero did not have a statue standing by the Colosseum during his rule as the Colosseum otherwise known as the Flavian Amphitheatre wasn't built until Vespasian came along. Nero's palace would have stood where the Colosseum was today and yes there was a large statue of Nero. The head was changed to that of the God Apollo when Nero mercifully died.

The Gladiatorial games took place long before the Colosseum was built. Many Emperors and rich aristocrats paid for the games or Ludi as they were known. They weren't really games at all but a sacred practice and part of the Roman criminal justice system. Patrons included Julius Caesar, Vespasian, Caligula etc. You'll have to do a little more research into the Roman Republic and Imperial Rome as it spans rather a long time, many kings, consuls and emperors and a lot of battles. Major military conflics includ the Punic Wars, Caesar in Gaul etc.
