When the cord is prolapsed in a first pregnancy there is no greater risk of this happening again, so there's no reason you must necessarily need another c-section.

The risks associated with c-section (major surgery) are actually HIGHER than those associated with VBAC. The major concern with the vaginal delivery after surgery is uterine rupture and this happens in only 1 PERCENT of VBAC's. Compare that with the risk statistics associated with a caesarean! Oh, and even if you are the very rare woman to experience rupture, the chance of you or baby being harmed as a result are miniscule. And almost all of these women go on to conceive again.

The largest study of its kind ever conducted undertaken by the National Institute of Child Health showed that risks are higher for a repeat caeserean than they are for the vaginal delivery simply because a caesarean is major surgery and carries inherent risks like infection, besides the additional risks to mother and child from the incision and anesthesia.

The main risk associated with VBAC is uterine rupture and this only occurs in about 0.7% of VBAC's. And even when it does occur, the chances are like 99% that the baby will be perfectly healthy and the mother will recover completely and still retain her fertility. One factor that increases the risk for rupture is when drugs are needlessly used to speed up or induce labor (like pitocin) so a VBAC is most successful when the mother is allowed to go into labor naturally.

This study also showed there is NO significant difference in the maternal death rate (it's still less than 1% both ways) between VBAC moms and moms who go for a repeat c-section.

It really depends on the incision that your doctor made. If your incision goes up and down (like from your nose to your toes direction) you will need another one. If it's a low vertical incision, like you're belly button is smiling, it's a possibility. A lot of doctors don't like to do VBACS because there's a risk of uterine rupture and they feel there's just no need to take that risk, but others will go ahead and let you try. Personally, I had two c-sections and wouldn't take the risk myself for the second one. I believe there's a bit of a mourning process that women go through after a c-section because things didn't turn out the way they had been imagined. It took me a long time to get over it the first time, but by the time my son was born, I had NO issue with it at all. The end result is that you give birth and you're a mother ...and you pay a physically higher price for it :)

Please do not even consider VBAC. I know an unplanned C-section can be terrible, I had one myself, but the second time is much easier. You schedule it, go in, get it done, no problems.
When I had my daughter there was a woman in the room next to me who really wanted a VBAC. She pushed and pushed and by the time they realized the baby was in trouble - it was too late. He died. She was rushed into surgery from a uterine rupture and I do not know if she survived.
My ob/Gyn will not do VBACs anymore. They lost too many babies that way. It is very very dangerous. They advise their patients if they want a VBAC, go somewhere else because it is not safe. Please, go for the c-section. The second one is a piece of cake compared to the first.
One of my closest friend's sister lost her beautiful baby girl because she had a VBAC. It was a tragedy and an unnecessary one at that. Some doctors will say it isn't too dangerous but trust me, it is!!!!!
Please reconsider for you and your precious baby.

Talk with you ob/gyn. S/he'll be the one to give you the best advice on your circumstance.

Chances you are will be able to have a vbac but don't be surprised if they put you in for another c-section.

Yes,
because a vbac is risky too many complications could occur but if you go into labor ON YOUR OWN and you dilate well then maybe a vaginal birth will be considered.

It all depends.....it depends on where and how you were cut and where the uterus was cut. If things went well and the cuts were right you may be able to try it naturally this time. only your doctor can know for sure - although some doctors will hesitate of refuse after any c-section so talk to him/her....if he/she refuses without giving you a valid reason then find another doctor.

I had my first baby by C-section and then my second was VBAC.

I didn't have a good C-section experience and I didn't want to repeat it, so I asked to be allowed to just get on with it, unless it became necessary to intervene.
My second baby was born healthy and well and I felt like a hero!

You're welcome to email me if you'd like to talk. It's such a big subject..

Yes, you will have to have another c-section. Its dangerous to have a vaginal birth after c-section so most doctors wont allow it.
