Insecurity. They are not sure if others will like them for who they are, so they try to look impressive / attractive. Like peacocks.
On the other hand, we women tend to the vain on occasion as well... :)

Why are men so vain? Why are women so vain? You cant just put a sex (female/male) with the category of vain! Both men and women are vain, and WOMEN are perhaps the more vain of the sexes. MEN are more egotistical. But both sexes are both. It's like one guy is extremely shy and generous, while another guy could be all into his looks and only think about himself. One girl could be high maintance while another girl could be laid back and tomboyish. Maybe the men you know are vain, but not every man is an egotistical, vain, full himself pig. Just like not every women is a gold digging "lets go shopping every hour of the day, OMG I love clothes and shoes" person.

Some men are vain because they want to look good, these days its all about image, even though personality comes first - in most cases first impressions count. Its not just women who are under pressure about how they should look, men are too.

It's nice that men are starting to make a bit of an effort but too much effort stops them being men and starts them being proper Nancy Boys. I'm not keen on the caveman look but i'm less keen on the false lookers. If a man spends more than fifteen minutes in the mirror each day i think they are secretly women trapped in mens bodies!

Compared to what? Women? Oh come on, even a woman can admit they're more vain than men.

Boys are vain. Men don't care.

About three years ago (age 32) I realised that I was going out without caring if I had shaved, had got white socks (!) showing, the "wrong" shoes with my trousers, had messy hair, cheap and nasty jeans etc. I got married not long after.

How often do you find a man is late to a party etc. because he spent 3 hours in the bathroom, tried on every item in his wardrobe before deciding on the one he tried on first, wines like a 2 year old every time he splits a nail, spends hours on the phone discussing with his friends what to wear out because "it would be like really cool to wear something that like matches tonight but it can't be like to like similar girlfriend", constanlty seeks approval from his partner up untill the second before they enter the bar and then decides he looks to underdressed and spends the entire night worrying about it and explaining that he really had to rush to be there on time and has to fix his hair, make up and clothes just to go to the local shop to buy 20 Bensons and the sunday paper?
I think it must be all these new male beauty products and the magazines that support their sale.

Its just the way things are these days. Everyone is afraid of being criticised, particulary for the way they look - men as well as women
