I know there are some without dye, but most have dye in them. It seems counter-intuitive and unnecessary.

Research the consumer and the product first. Each compnay and some of the few collaborate to increse sales in one product with bleach and the other with dye. It forces the consumer to lean towards one when the other fails and both are profits to the same company.

MONEY, People think a "blue" liquid cleans better than a clear one, T.V. has told them this for years.
Now they believe it as a fact.... So manufacturers put blue dye in it, thinking it will sell better
than their competitors that is clear or green or something else.

Blue to make optical white. White seems brighter when it is just a touch blue.

Also detergent for black has red in it to deepen the black.

yes it does, i dont know. just use the ones without dyes in them and dont think about it.

I agree. It often gets all over my whites if I pour the liquid straight into the washer.
