Why use slang/ebonics?

I never understood why people would speak/type/communicate in a way that makes them sound uneducated.

I understand why people use internet slang, because it makes typing go a lot quicker.

This question was not meant to offend people, I genuinely want to know.

I don't know why either; I really don't like ebonics but if people want to use it amongst themselves, that's fine. However, if you're communicating with the general public, English must be spoken.

Two reasons:
Either they think it makes them sound cool or they are in fact uneducated. I like slang a little, but I really don't like ebonics because it doesn't even really fit in with the English language and it breaks so many grammar rules I started to get annoyed. But that's just me.

You're correct. Ebonics is a slang that a group of people actually insisted that it should become a second language. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I think it probably originated with someone just trying to shorten their words or sentences and having an accent. Then someone thought it sounded cool and started copying it and it caught on like spaghetti strap tanks at Old Navy. That is just what I think. I use more slang when I talk than when I type.

I think they don't understand that making an effort to sound educated will improve their lives. They believe that speaking like an educated person is "uncool" or however they say that. Some of them even like offending grammatical sensibilities.

I'm with you, though. If I had to speak with (for example) a British accent to sound educated, I would.

if you understand why people use internet slang then you would know that it is a culture. I'm sure you have a best friend or brother or sister. and you may speak a language that only you guys know, It's fun. It doesn't necessarily mean that you are illiterate, or stupid.
