I need to know what and where to go to find out the bare essentials to carrying on a conversation with another person regarding the NFL, NBA, NHL & MLB. I have to sound like a sports pro.

Perhaps I can help you out. I have been a producer on both the Pittsburgh Steelers Radio Network, and the Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network. I had worked on a daily basis with high-end talent in the broadcast booth.
First, don't try to be just like any other broadcaster you have heard on the air. You must be able to "be yourself" A good sports broadcaster can sit down and make even the most un-important fact, or stat, interesting. TV announcing is a little easier, you have the picture on the screen for everybody to see, all you need to do is re-hash what they just saw happen. Radio is a whole different story. You have to be able to paint a mental picture in the listeners mind of exactly what is going on. They call radio "the theater of the mind" that simply means that what you describe as you are calling the game is exactly how people will interprete what is going on.
All of the announcers that I have worked with start preping for every game by going to the websites of the teams that are playing in the game they are about broadcast. They will find interesting facts, and stats, and print them out to be able to use them later in the game when they need filler material. You can also go to the websites of newspapers from the areas that the teams are from to try to get a little inside "scoop" to use in the broadcast.
The internet is a great place to find all kinds of tidbits and info on all sports teams, as well as individual players.

I hope this helped you out a little. If you have any other questions you can feel free to email me at jam961@yahoo.com
I would be more than happy to try to provide you with any info that you may need.
