Children go stay with relatives in a big house on the ocean, has a secret room they discover. They also uncover a Roman road while exploring the woods nearby. Can't remember if they were orphans or just there for the summer. Had no luck with Google. And it's not a Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys book. Any of you who were kids back then remember this book?

that's a good guess :-) but this was an obscure author. used to check it out at the library over and over, but the school burned so no records. wanted to get it for my niece.

There is a place where you can describe a book on www.abebooks.com and leave it there as long as you like. If anyone recognizes the book they'll let you know the title. Maybe that will help if no one here knows the answer.

I don't think this is it, but you might enjoy it because it's similar.

Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper. its the first in a series called 'the dark is rising'. In this first book three childern are vacationing in england at a beach house. They find a map and have to protect it from 'the dark', which is basically all evil. There aren't Roman Roads in it, but there are many references through out the series to King Arthur's time.

That almost sounds like The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
I don't know what book you are talking about, but it sure sounds like a good read.
