Tolerant and Assertive?
What is tolerant?
The American Heritage Dictionary says,
"tol·er·ant ... adj. 1. Inclined to tolerate the beliefs, practices, or traits of others; forbearing. 2. Able to withstand or endure an adverse environmental condition. --tol“er·ant·ly adv."
And what is assertive?
The same dictionary,
"as·ser·tion ... n. 1. The act of asserting. 2. Something declared or stated positively, often with no support or attempt at proof. --as·ser“tion·al adj."
Yes, I believe you can be tolerant and assertive. When we all have a win-win-win result in mind and are working toward it, the best for all emerges. That is, we are tolerant of the others' ideas and wishes, but also stand up for ourselves. It is possible.
However, I believe that some of our contemporaries only learn through losing, and that's what they are aiming for, until someone gives them that lesson.
Imagine this world, when we all have win-win-win on our mind!
Wishing you win-win-win, in all your life!

You can't in all situations, just some situations.. Being assertive mean to stick by your guns when you think that you're right, and in doing so, you can't give way to something which you know to be wrong.

the two are not diametrically opposites in ideology or practice.
tolerance referce to accepting differences and assertiveness refers to being able to stand up for one's beliefs and rights w/out discounting the beliefs & rights of others. that's how i understand it.

Yes, you can listen to other points of view and debate them intelligently and openly if you disagree, and still hold your own opinions without causing offense to others.
