as similarly artificial as getting plastic surgery? E.g., curling and putting mascara on lashes to make the eyes stand out and have them appear longer; silver shadow between the eyes to make seem further apart; outlining the eyes in liner to get them in the desired shape; some lipsticks for fuller lips, etc.

Some people say they don't believe in plastic surgery for the sole reason that it's artificial, but is make-up, hair styling, etc. similar?

I think the attitude of being fake is a lot worse than putting on some make-up or getting plastic surgery.

Vanity is just part of a mating ritual. We just have new and inventive ways of giving ourselves the perception that we are more beautiful.

I don't think the permanence of plastic surgery is relevant since both make-up and surgery have the same goal.

Problems occur when individuals become too focused on their external appearance and lose sight of who they are.

I see your point, and it is an interesting and true one. Technically I suppose everything we do could be considered fakeness, like you said. But the thing with wearing make up is that it has to come off sometime. You can't leave it on forever. Also, let's think about the one day the person FORGETS to wear makeup...they're going to look like a mess. (yikes I think I strayed away from your question)
