I have got one 512 which is pc2100 spec bought from Maplins, the other 512 is Kingston, and is also pc2100 spec, now I cannot get my computer to boot up in dual channel, it says single channel, I have a Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9 which is a socket 939. which clearly states that it supports dual channel DDR400, as the processor has built in memory controller as well, any idea's why I cannot get the computer to boot up in dual channel mode? Do I need to buy 400 spec memory for it to work or is there something I am doing wrong, there is no setting in the bios to enable this feature, and I am at a loss, Please can someone help?

I could be wrong with this...but I think you'll need to get DDR400 ( PC3200) RAM to run Dual Channel Mode. I have a pretty similar set up as you do..and Im using 3GB of Kingston DDR400 with a AMD 3700+ and its picking up the dual channel without a problem. I think mixed mfg. pc2100 will run single channel only...but I've been wrong before!! See what the MFG. of the motherboard says...I use ASUS and I had to get Kingston to get it to work correctly. First ram I bought ( Crucial) wouldnt even let the PC boot.

Just to clarify what serenity said, it is not that complicated, not nearly. Now your problem is most likely that in order to have things run in dual channel, they have to be exactly the same. My guess would be that your new stick has a lower CAS latency than the old stick. I don't believe that the fact they are not DDR400 is the problem, although I have to say if your motherboard is rated for 400, you might as well get 400, it will work faster.

Now as for all that stuff put out there by serenity, for anyone else reading this, the only two considerations are memory speed and how much memory your MB will handle. The speed of the CPU or "all the other items" is irrelevant. Just make sure you get the right memory speed for your motherboard and that you can support the amount of memory you put in. And there is nothing wrong with mixing and matching brands, assuming of course you are not concerned with the dual channel issue. Don't be scared of the memory upgrade.

Dual channel DDR starts at 400mhz type memory, yes you would need to buy DDR400 THAT says it is a dual channel DDR-type, you cannot just get 2 pc3200's that are single channel ones, and say run in dual channel, and they will. Also, you need to look at your motherboard, and when you do install dual channel DDR, that you install them into the correct slots, otherwise they won't work.

Assuming your mother board can support 1gb, (And I'm almost sure it can seeing it is supporting an Athlon 64 3500+ it's prolly socket 939 and can support up to 2 gb of DDR1).

The real problem is you are appear to have your memory working just fine. But unfortunately you need to match the specs. The exact same memory modules should be installed. Buy them at the same time.

www.newegg.com or www.pricewatch.com will have great bundles for you to buy for under $120 bucks.

Listen, you need to take out the new memory you put in and then your computer will boot up agian. Putting new memory into a computer is not as simple as going out and buying a memory module. There are several considerations you need to know in order to buy the exactly correct memory for your computer. Contact your computer manufacturer and get all the specs you need and then make your purchase through them.

My fiance recently put extra memory into his computer and it ran fine a few days and then went to a blue screen of death and then failed to boot up at all. We took it out and it booted up just fine as it nothing had ever occurred.

First, you need to know how much memory your processor can handle. Different machines can handle different amount of memory. You can't just add any amount of memory you want. You also have to know the entire specs of your current memory. The speed, it has to have the same ghz as the processor and other items. If even one of these specs if off you will crash and burn like you did. You should never mix and match memory modules, I don't care what the techs at the local electronics store tells you. They just want to sell their memory, they don't care about your system.

Take out the new memory and you will boot up fine. Then take back the memory you just bought, (If the return period is not up yet) and contact your manufacturer. I highly reccommend you do NOT listen to any memory choices put out here by members. They do not have access to your computer and so do not know what your exact specs are. If you are still under warrenty then your hardware department will tell you exactly what to buy.

Good luck in upgrading your memory. Have a nice day.

Man, definitely get the the 512 Mb DDR RAM, you need more than 256 Mb. Otherwise you are gonna make this CPU to work a lot and get overheated most of time.

You may need AMD specific ram. Look at the current ram you have, and compare to the kingstion. Is it 64x64, or 64x72, this can make a difference too.

Try Crucial.com and locate your computer brand, this will help you chose the correct ram you need.

You can go to newegg. com and find amd specific ram as well.

Good luck

try changing the slots first put one in each coloured slot
check your PC is seeing both and they are reading the correct amount of ram if not then your new ram is u/s
