Before they met him he had a wife and daughter who would be Laura's age and they both died of Scarlett Fever because there was no doc close to them.
Then he married Grace Snider, whom he was courting and they adopted John Jr, Carl and Ellishia, when their mom died and were about to be adopted by 2 families. John Jr died and later Grace kicked him out. (After Victor French's cop show failed and he and Michael Landon were friendly again, they did this to bring him back to the show)
Then he didn't adopt but took care of a boy named Matthew who was mute and brought on the show as a "Wild Boy" in a medicine show. About 1/2 a season later, Matthew was reunited with his father and left with him.

Don't know about Victor French.
In the books, Mr. Edwards did have a family but they died in a fever. In the tv show, he married Grace and adopted 3 kids, he was also a father like figure to a kid that was mute.

Isaiah Edwards or as he is more commonly known, Mr. Edwards, is a mountain man, and the first person Caroline and Charles Ingalls met while settling in Kansas. In result, many of the residents moved. Isaiah has lived in the mountains before, and has used his keen sense of direction to help the townspeople of Walut Grove in emergencies. Such as in the Blizzard, Edwards' stays outside all night with two of his children, Carl and Alicia. Early on it is found out that Mr. Edwards can't read in the episode, "Mr. Edwards' Homecoming." This served to be problem when John Jr. and Isaiah went hunting, John gave him a letter about how he felt. Mr. Edwards couldn't read this which presented a problem, the letter was of some importance. Later, Isaiah swallowed his pride and began to learn how to read. Not long after, John Jr. got a scholarship to a university in Chicago. John moved to Chicago, and Mary & Charles came to visit him only to find out city life had changed him and his engagement with Mary was off. A few years later, John was killed, which resulted in Edwards drinking again. He continually drinks until Grace divorces him and he moves back to Walnut Grove. He overcomes his drinking habit, becomes a Christian and remains in the town until it is blown up in "The Last Farewell"

No, but he married a lady and they adopted three children. Near the end of one of the seasons the lady divorced him because he was an alcoholic. He became an alcoholic because one of the kids died.
