Getting a computer(notebook) for school. I'm going into graphic arts but also want the notebook for typing reports and taking notes in class.
Don't tell me to get a Mac, I want a Dell.
What is the minimun amount or ROM, RAM, ect needed to best run Graphics/Art programs?
Any other suggestions in what to look for?

In response to some answers if you really wanna read all this:
I said no Mac because I have used Macs in school and never came across one that worked correctly. My graphic arts teacher said that Macs were the best yet the computers in the Mac lab were always crashing or doing odd things and he never really seemed to know how to fix it. He also said he knew very little about computers, just art.
I find it interesting that Mac users often say that they've never tried anything but Mac and can somehow still say Mac is the best. I'm going from expirience. People use Mac because everyone else in the industry uses it.
However, I'll still consider a Mac and do plan to buy one in the future, but for now I'd like a Dell computer. Eventualy I'll have both.

Max the ram out to about 2 gigs
Don't buy all the RAM from Dell, they tend to way over price... I suggest you take a look at Toshiba, they are very reliable and Tosh backs their products up very well. Dell doesn't...
For extra ram take a look at http://www.crucial.com
When I went to College I just used my Laptop to record the class while I worked on other things...

There are some standards that you should go by when purchasing your new computer:
You want NO LESS than 512 MB RAM
You want NO LESS than a 80 GB Hard-Drive
the more RAM and Hard-Drive space the better...
For a graphic/art student I would personally suggest
1GBRAM and at least a 100GB hard-drive
I would suggest maybe getting a tablet PC, one of the ones where you write on the screen with the stylus. This will make taking notes easier and drawing anything you may need to do by free hand. Dells are good computers, you can get them customized to exactly what you are looking for. Good Luck!
If your mind could be changed at all, I would however suggest leaning towards a Mac, they are the absolute best when it comes to Graphic/Designing!

Why in the hell would you want a Dell for graphic design? I've never used anything BUT a Mac, and its the industry standard. Besides, if you're so hung up on using Windows, you can get a new Mac with an Intel processor and run either Windows,or OS X. As for speed, memory, RAM, and all of that? The more, the better, a G.D. needs as much as we can get if we're going to make our files look good, be it animated, printed, or on line.
A Dell will not only cause you problems in the future, it will also slow down, freeze and lock up on you. Its susceptible to viruses, and all other sorts of crap that you just don't have time for as a student and as a graphic designer. Give me a heads up when you're looking for programs, I can let you in on the best to use for what and what sort of short cuts you can create for our projects.
Good Luck, kid!

Okay, I know you said no to a MAC, but seriously, for graphic arts it is the best, and on the new ones you can run MS Office the same as a regular PC.
:)
If you must buy a Dell,
Look for at least 1G of RAM, a good motherboard and a DVD burning drive so that you have room to grow.

Any new notebook will do. If you are going to take notes in class (please don't) then make sure the keyboard is silent.
Typing your notes in class is annoying to those around you. Many professors post their lectures on the internet anyways. Well, maybe not many, but enough.
Make sure to maximize your memory and hard drive specs.
And Mac is actually the choice among graphic design professionals. So you may want to rethink your bias.

Well the cheapest Dell Notebook is 350 pounds or probably just over $400...it is very basic, only available from their website www.dell.co.uk/ www.dell.com and is high-performance enough to comfortably run your graphics program. The minimum requirement would be roughly 128MB of RAM.
