I would NEVER buy a Ford. They are well renouned for their trucks, but they got left behind in the car department by the Japanese market. Seriously, consider a Honda or a Toyota - it will last longer and have less mechanical issues.

See if the previous owner has ever serviced the transmission. If not it will have to be done soon (around 45 -60K) I worked for a Ford dealership for over 5 years and the Taurus does NOT have many transmission issues if it is serviced properly. My brother has a 1997 and it has over 200K miles on it and the transmission has NEVER been rebuilt or replaced.
Any vehicle with an electronic overdrive transmission will have problems if the transmission is not serviced regularly, especially front wheel drive vehicles, like the Taurus.
You should get around 25 mpg out of the Taurus under normal driving conditions. Good luck with your new car!

Don't buy it the transmissions in those are junk... You will hit 70-80k and have to replace it at $2000 to do it then unless your transmission guy knows what hole to bore out to fix the problem with that trans you will have to do one every 40-50k after that.

wait till it breaks down, then you will regret ever buying it, although they are fast and fun but the labor for repair is nuts. oh i forgot, about 18 to 26 mpg if you keep your foot out of it
