All of Europe was racing to find a faster way, by sea, to India. It was believed by some that the world was round(those crazy fools) and if you connected the mapped world of the day, the fastest way to India would not be around the Horn of Africa, but straight across the Atlantic! Columbus actually thought he did find the passage, but really found the Dominican Republic(as we know it today). Perhaps he should have discussed things with Leif Ericsson before he left?
