I think it happened when the Christian right took over the rep party (with W's blessing...puny, I know). They forgot what it means to be "conservative".
Instead of supporting less government intrusion on the lives of Americans, they pulled a complete 180 squashing liberties left and right (no pun intended). It's a mentality much more akin to a totalitarian regime than a republic.
Before Hellfire Christians took over the republican party, the reps were about fiscal conservation, now they spend our hard earned cash like they inherited it from a rich uncle.
Keep in mind, their are plenty of true conservatives out there that don't support the madness and are just as ticked off about it as everyone else.
I never subscribed to either the left or right wing mentality. I figured both sides had something to offer. Not anymore. Neocons have become the poster brats of the right. They're nothing but dimwitted zealots. It's such a dangerous combination.
---Yeah, "discostu" is confused. The Nazis were technically a totalitarian regime, in other words, about as far right as you can get. But I see how it can be confusing, rightwing and leftwing lunatics really have more in common than they'd care to admit.

Hitler would consider Bush weak for not carting away ALL muslins into concentration camps & gas chambers.
Hitler would be amazed the Dixie Chicks were allowed to live, much less continue to perform across the country.
Hitler would advise Bush to shut down this site, but only after tracking down KooKooBananas & the like.
Hitler would consider Bush a wimp because Hitler never understood freedom. And the fact that we are allowed to call Bush "Hitler" only serves to point out how unlike Hitler Bush is!

That would be about the time they interfered with Michael Schaivo's
ability to fufill his wife's last wishes.
That moment for the "right" was the corresponding moment to the "left" at the Democratic Convention in 1968.It was at that point where America said"Ok.We've given you a lot of space because, quite frankly, you're dangerous. Now it's not about a 'message' anymore, not you're just at odds with the police."
Even the majority of Bush's key base, the Christian Right, were embarassed by his rhetoric.Rick Santorum and Tom Delay flew in and used it for shameless self-promotion.Bush said he wanted to "err on the side of life".However,is seems that does not apply, unfortunately,to the unfolding civil war in Iraq.
The Far Right Wing of the Republican party turned the last days of Terry Schaivo's life into a media circus. It was the beginning of their end.
