Your employer reports your earnings using your SSN#. So the IRS and Government know exactly where you are. And the first 3 digits of your SSN tells which state you were located when you originally applied for it.

They use your social security number like they do DNA. No one has the same SSN, and that number is attached to everything you do. They have it at your bank, your job, any credit card's you use, and even at the IRS. Everytime you move when you change your address it is documented with the government. It is then put into a database that keeps track of where you have lived. If you know a person's SSN you can go to Intelius.com and do a background check on them. It will even show you who their neighbors were.

By law the government cannot use your social security number to track you down for anything you may have done. However, credit card numbers, driver license numbers, phone numbers etc are fair game. And note that is the government, that does not say anything about private investigators etc.

The feds know where you filed from, where you work, where your money goes to if you get any from the government. This is used a lot by the government trying to locate deadbeat dads! It is called the Federal Locater Service!
The best, and most often used sources are Trans union, experian and Equifax! They have everything you need to know. Public access though is supposed to be very limited and under a lot of laws of nondisclosure!
The police usually carry your SSN if you have ever called them for anything!

The SSN is not really used to find people, but it is useful to determine if the person you find is the person you are looking for.

It's the one number most people can't change, so it's used to track them.

your credit reports shows your more recent address on there which is gotten from your creditors. if it was your last address and you moved since then, they can still call whoever and find out where you moved to.
