It's probably because having a smear is from the nurses point of veiw a 'simple procedure' but from the patients point of view you probably had all sorts of things in the back of your mind e.g "being naked from the waist down, having someone you hardly know fiddling about with medical instruments in your most intimate area, waiting to see if you feel an uncomfortable pain, the thought of a smear being linked with cancer" Had you been feeling a bit upset or vunerable within the few days previous to the smear? Don't worry, it's a common feelingat a time like that, even if you didn't expect it.

Different women respond in different ways to smear tests. Like with me, it hurts me when they scrape the thing about my cervix. Ive mentioined it to the nurse and doctor and they both said that it cant possible hurt as there are no pain type nerves in that bit. But I can tell you hand on heart that I do feel it and it does hurt.
Try not to worry about it too much though and when your next one comes up tell the person doing it about your last time and they will help you so it shouldnt happen again.
Good luck babes xx

I felt that way the first time I tried to insert a tampon. I almost puked... I gagged...almost passed out... and was shaking a long timeafterward....
I think I was afraid of hurting myself,or of any discomfort or pain I would feel afterward while wearing it.
Were you maybe afraid of the pain too?
I have since been to a gyn and had a pap and everything- a wholecheck up. I wasn't afraid of the pain and was determined to go through with it all- and just ignore discomfort until it was allover. I was totally fine, not nervous at all.
Has to do, for me, with being brave. Really being compassionte toward myself, too- wanting to take care of me so I was tough and proud going in. :) Dunno if that helps... :)

It is quite an evasive and personal procedure. Maybe you didn't feel trust with the person who was performing the test. Fluorescent lighting?? It's a very unnatural light and can cause such feelings... It's tough to relax under clinical situations sometimes. It's done now....til next time...a woman's work is never done !!! Congratulations for even going, plenty don't through either fear or embarrassment..not a risk I would be willing to take.
