So why are dogs,"man's best friend"? Why can't a cat be?Or a ferret?Or a mountain goat?Or an attractive woman?

I think that the term was coined many moons ago, and refers to the fact that dogs can be trained to do the work a man would have to do alone if he didn't have his dog. A working companion.
Herding, guarding, tracking, hunting etc.
I think the term was never meant to be derogatory towards other creatures, or to designate that man could not be best friends with a cat or a bird, or a horse.

Dogs are loyal. Cats are too independent. Ferrets are too nibbly. Mountain goats also nibble too much. Attractive women are sometimes loyal and sometimes just attractive. Dogs are loyal.

Dogs have worked with humans for thousands of years and were the first domesticated animal. They work with people and save their lives. I think it's mainly an expression to show just how close humans and dogs have been for so long.

i have a story

there was an old man, and everyday he would walk to the train station across town for work, his dog would follow him, wen the man came back that night, the dog was waiting for him and they would walk home together, they did this everyday for many years

one day the old man died

and everyday that dog would walk up to the station waiting for his owner to get off that train, he did this till the day he died

Dogs love unconditionally no matter what faults a person has. A dog forgives and forgets, loves and protects unconditionally. No other animal is like that, though people try.
