I've always heard people say a 125 two-stroke is comparable to a 250 four-stroke...why is that?

its all about revolutions 2 strokes or 4 strokes per revolution so 4 stroke takes twice as long making it equal to 2 stroke on level ground however put it on gradient then the 4 stroke will not strain as much making a smoother easier climb

Because of the two-stroke's design, it make one power stroke per every revolution of the crankshaft. Four-stroke motors only produce a power stroke for every two revolutions of the crankshaft. So, while YZ250F has a motor that displaces twice that of the YZ125, their outputs are comparable, and some would say they 125 has an advantage due to it's slightly lower weight.

when it comes to racing the power bands are about the same, the 4 stroke is slower off the line than the 2 stroke but the top end power is about the same, CC's wise the 125 is just that around 125cc's and the 250 is around 250cc's, this is why they let the four stroke 450's race with the 2 stroke 250's

Every 1,000 revolutions on a two stoke=1,000 power stokes
Every 1,000 revolutions on a four stroke=500 power strokes
