the fields of athenry.
by the lonely prison wall i heard a young girl calling
michael they are taking you away
for you stole trevelyn's corn so the young might see the morn
now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay

low lie the fields of athenry where once we watched the small free birds fly
our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
it's so lonely 'round the fields of athenry

by a lonely prison wall i heard a young man calling
nothing matters mary when you're free
against the famine and the crown i rebelled they ran me down
now you must raise our child with dignity

by a lonely prison wall she watched the last star falling
and that prison ship sailed out against the sky
sure she'll wait and hope and pray for her love in botany bay
it's so lonely 'round the fields of athenry.

sorry i cannot work it out ether.

Athenry is a town in Ireland.

The fields of Athenry is not so much a rebel song. Its lyrics concentrate on human emotions. It is about being forced to leave your home country never to return there again.

Its roots are in the famine times in Ireland where thousands of people were deported - often to Austalia for the the most trivial of crimes committed in times of desperation.

How it ended up as a football song is a mystery but it was a very popular song picked up by Irish emigrants in later times in England. Liverpool being one of the central places that the Irish settled in it then somehow made the journey on to the terraces.

Obviously an anthem for the masses - some songs seem to have elements that appeal to everyone.

Its ''The fields of Athenry'' hun, and I think it has something to do with the vast numbers of Irish who would dock at Liverpool, and the large amount of Irish people who come to settle there through the times. Its an old Irish song, and a lot of Liverpudlians have Irish descent (as Ive just explained) Hope that helps xxx

Because during mass emigration from Ireland the main ferry was from Dublin to Liverpool where many Irish settled down, hence why so many Irish follow Liverpool, Myself included.
Any way the Kop sings a version called the fields of anfield road.

What the hell is she on about? Stick to washing up! This song is not an Irish Rebel song and is copied by many teams who add their filthy sectarian words to it.
