They're talking about Shonen Manga (Shonen is Japanese for boy or for boys). But that's still not true. Shonen is enjoyed by both genders all over the world! I should know, I'm a girl and I LOVE Shonen Manga! The violence is what makes it fun to read Anybody who says otherwise is a baka (idiot, stupid, crazy, et cetera)

I don't know. I love anime/manga. I don't really care what people say. I get weird looks when I walk into a comic book store. I've just gotten used to people making assumptions and being treated like I'm the exception to those assumptions.
Personally I love the violence and blood as much as any guy out there.

I really don't know, seeing as at my school most of the people who like manga/anime are girls after all. Perhaps they think that most girls are preppy pansies who hate blood and violence- that or those "Miss America" types who always make speeches about peace.
There is also the "shojo/shonen" classifications of manga, shojo for girls, yet quite a few guys like it, and shonen for guys, even though I think about half of those readers are girls as well. People's impression of females is still probably influenced by he past, where girls sat there and looked pretty when they weren't doing housework: in other words, completely unexposed to the violence of the real world. Plus those old-type people who think watching anime and reading "comics" as damaging to the brain and "unproper." (
btw, what age are you that suprises people? If your really young or something, people probably just don't know why a kid's parents would expose them to that kind of stuff; if your in any kind of school, (public or college) they think you wouldn't have time to "waste," and if your older than schoolage, well, they probably think of it as immature, probably mostly for geeks, tomboys and dropouts. But then again, I really don't know; I'm in the same boat as you.

'cause non-otaku are baka and think that girls will be turned off by the crude, violent and pornographic content of some manga and anime. They have obviously never heard of shojo, stuff directed specifically at girls. That, and they are sexist pigs who don't understand the art of a blood smeared "cartoon". I love the violence of some of the anime and manga out there. My parents think that it's creepy when I watch stuff like that. Mwahahahahaaa! XP

I really don't see that to be true at all. Just about every fan I've ever known (mostly on the internet) is female. A lot of older gals in fact, and any guys I've known tend to be younger, but also there seem to be very few...unless there are a lot of male fans that just don't get into anime/manga the way girls do. That's just my personal experience, which is obviously much the opposite of yours.

If they (people) do say that, I think it's because they're associating anime and manga with American/Western style comics. Western comics has a much smaller female following /market than it does with males.
They're probably just assuming that since most girls don't like Western comics, they don't like Eastern comics either.

don't know streotype i guess. but i am a girl and love manga and anime. but i think they are talking about shonen it for boys just like shojo is for girls.

ive been to cons with wolfie chick and usually their are more girls then guys which is kind of depressing but for other reasons, any way half the time at the bookstore when im looking for manga im the only guy looking for it, but maybe its just the town you live in

i LOVE anime and manga, i don'tknow why people people say girls don't like it. me, my friend ,and my little sister LOVE anime/manga. i especially love shonen anime. especially the violent ones with cursing and blood and 'gross' stuff.
