It probably has something to do with either water leaking from somewhere or the flooring (carpeting, vinyl tiles, etc) could be loose from the flooring underneath..Any kind of water or moisture over time will effect all kinds of flooring...

It could be a number of things...

Termites is a big contributor of "soft floors" as they attack the floor joists under them...
(Take a screw driver and try to "jamb" the thing into the floor joists where the floor is soft, and see if you can poke it through...if you do, call an exterminator!).

You could have a cracked beam underneath the floor. (If you do, then you simply lifte the beam to level, with a jack and 4X4 and then "sister" or "marry" a beam of the exact size to that beam, by having 4 foot on either side of the crack or split, so, your going to need an 8 foot piece of lumber, and how ever the height of the board is, nailed to the existing beam).

You could have a bad sub floor, (water damage could have occured if you had a flood, or have had a leak, or if some one constantly spills things in that area, and it was let to "set" and seep down into the sub floor).

You can not do this one yourself, (rip up the floor, and replace the sub floor), unless your extremely handy with woodworking tools and have the will to do this, or experience and "guts" :)

Now, a sinking floor, could mean that your foundation is sinking, and you have to go to the basement for that one. Look at the interrior walls, and check the height of the walls on all four sides, (tape measure to be sure), if they are all exact, then its the floor itself...(you can usually tell, if its sinking by the large cracks in the wall).

I wish you well..
